Accountant Resume Example and Guide
A complete sample, plus the compliance detail that separates a bookkeeper from an accountant on paper.
For accountants with 0–6 years, ca inter and ca dropouts, and anyone moving from audit into industry.
An accountant's resume is read for two things: which statutory filings you have actually done, and the size of the books you handled. Software names alone will not carry it, because every applicant lists Tally. The resumes that get calls state the turnover of the entity, the filings they owned month after month, and what they closed or recovered.
What recruiters look for first
- The filings you personally prepared or filed: GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, TDS returns, advance tax.
- Turnover or transaction volume of the books you handled, which sets the level of the role.
- Month-end and year-end close: whether you closed, or only fed data to whoever did.
- Software by version and module, since Tally Prime, SAP FICO and Zoho Books imply different environments.
- Audit exposure: statutory, internal or tax, and whose side you were on.
Summary examples
B.Com graduate with CA Inter (both groups) and three years of articleship covering statutory audit and GST compliance for clients up to ₹60 crore turnover. Filed GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B monthly for 14 clients and reconciled input tax credit against GSTR-2B.
Accountant handling end-to-end books for a ₹120 crore manufacturing entity in Tally Prime and SAP FICO. Owns monthly GST and TDS compliance, closes the month in four working days, and recovered ₹18 lakh of blocked input tax credit through a vendor reconciliation drive.
Bullet points, before and after
Responsible for GST filing and TDS
Filed GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B monthly for an entity with ₹120 crore turnover, with no late fee in 24 months
Names the specific returns and the turnover behind them, then adds the compliance record that proves reliability.
Handled accounts payable and vendor payments
Processed about 450 vendor invoices a month in Tally Prime and cut the three-way match backlog from 11 days to 2
Volume plus a process improvement, rather than a restatement of the job title.
Did bank reconciliation and ledger scrutiny
Reconciled 6 bank accounts monthly and cleared a ₹32 lakh suspense balance carried from two prior years
Clearing old suspense is concrete, auditable work that reviewers in this field immediately recognise.
Assisted in statutory audit
Prepared schedules and resolved 40 auditor queries for the FY24 statutory audit, signed off with no qualification
The clean sign-off is the outcome; the query count shows the scale of your involvement.
Worked on input tax credit reconciliation
Reconciled input tax credit against GSTR-2B across 300 vendors and recovered ₹18 lakh previously written off
A recovery figure is the clearest money result an accountant can show.

Mistakes specific to this role
Listing Tally and stopping there
Every applicant lists Tally, so on its own it is not information. State the version, the modules you used and the volume you ran through it, and name any second system such as SAP FICO or Zoho Books, because that is what distinguishes environments.
Not stating the size of the books
Handling a ₹2 crore proprietorship and a ₹200 crore company are different jobs described in identical language. Give the turnover, the number of entities, or the monthly invoice volume in the first bullet of each role.
Being vague about who filed
"Involved in GST compliance" could mean you prepared the working or that you filed the return. Say which. Hiring managers in accounts care about the difference and will ask.
Omitting the articleship detail
For CA Inter candidates and dropouts, articleship is the strongest experience on the page. Name the firm type, the client sizes and the mix of statutory, internal and tax audit work rather than compressing three years into one line.
Burying the compliance record
A clean record is a genuine selling point in this role. If you went two years with no late filing, no notice and no penalty, say so plainly in a bullet.
